Day Trips from San Francisco

Activities day trips Destinations pescadero sacramento San Francisco USA & Canada

There are certainly lots of fantastic things to keep you busy for a long time in fabulous San Francisco.  If you are staying for quite some time though there are also loads of cool things within the north of California that are really easy to get to for some terrific day trips – you really can explore so much of this part of the state with ease.

Some recommended day trips from San Francisco include:

Napa Valley

Although better known for its glorious wines, and so often thought of as being more of a place for the adults to have fun, the lovely landscapes are also attractive to younger visitors too – the whole family can have fun exploring the stunning Napa Valley.  Many places allow kids to go on the tasting tours, although, of course, they can’t actually sample alcoholic drinks.  They can, however, enjoy the delicious food that is available at the different wineries and vineyards.  The high aerial tram at Sterling Vineyards is often a hit with kids – you can all see for far and wide as you make your way up the hill.  You can also enjoy a family hot air balloon ride over the beautiful area.  Another popular attraction is the geyser at Calistoga; frequently erupting, it is sure to make the kids feel rather awestruck.  You won’t find it difficult to find a good play area where the kids can cut loose for an hour or two and the markets can be a interesting place for a wander.

Mendocino

Mendocino

Mendocino is a beautiful place where the diverse landscapes appeal to people of all ages.  There are rugged coastal areas that offer many great scenic walking opportunities, and there are tall and graceful redwood trees that meet the coast quite spectacularly.  There are wineries, lighthouses, and a cool aquarium, and activities include horse riding and walking in the interesting Van Damme State Park.

Sacramento

The state capital, there are heaps of things for the kids to enjoy in Sacramento.  Best of all, there is an excellent selection of activities both indoors and outdoors, so you know that you can all have fun whatever the weather is like.  The pretty state capitol building is popular.  There are interesting museums and lush parks with brilliant play areas.  Funderland amusement park is usually a huge hit with younger visitors, and all rides have been created with little ones in mind, offering just the right level of excitement.  Another great place is Fairytale Town with its fabulous play areas that are based in different well-known fairytales and its small petting zoo.  Fans off larger animals can have bags of fun seeing a wide range of different animals from all over the world at the zoo.  Take a wander around Old Sacramento for a different view of the city and an olde worlde vibe.

Pescadero

Pescadero

Just an hour’s drive away from San Francisco, Pescadero offers one of the finest beaches around.  You can enjoy the gorgeous sands and take a dip in the ocean.  Your kids can also gaze up at one of the tallest lighthouses in the USA – Pigeon Point Lighthouse.  Although visitors cannot go inside it is still pretty cool to look at from the outside.

Other great day trips from San Francisco include Sausalito, Grass Valley, Bolinas, Sonoma, Williams, and Nevada City.  Do you know of any other great day trips from San Francisco?
