Following on from our original list of great US national parks with kids, we thought we’d share even more terrific places to enjoy the immense diversity of the vast USA and all its marvellous landscapes and wildlife.

Biscayne National Park

Biscayne

In the southern part of Florida and not too far away from glamorous Miami, Biscayne National Park is a great place to take kids that are fans of the ocean and all the sea creatures that live in the waters. Children can not only swim in the sparkling sea but can also don a snorkel and mask, grip onto a float, and see what marine creatures live just below them. There is a wide variety of colourful and interesting aquatic life to admire and your kids are sure to be enthralled! The sandy beaches are great for taking a breather and boat trips are available.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park

Boasting one of the most awesome caves in the world, New Mexico’s Carlsbad Caverns National Park is a fascinating trip for people of all ages. Head underground and be blown away by the sheer size of the Big Room – an enormous and vast natural cave chamber. You can reach it by elevator or by walking down. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, there are several other caves that are open to the public too, many of which contain impressive rock stalactites and stalagmites. Marvel at the rock formations and rugged natural beauty. Outside of the caves, the arid landscape is home to cacti and other prickly plants – make sure little ones keep their hands away! Creatures that you may spot include skunks, racoons, insects, bats, and birds. Open hiking trails let you admire the views.

Crater Lake National Park

Crater Lake Oregon

Situated in Oregon, this is where you can find the deepest lake in all of the USA. A stunning national park, you can wow your kids by telling them how the caldera and lake were created – by a huge volcanic eruption by Mount Mazama many thousands of years back in time. Boat tours are available in the summer time and there are plenty of walking trails and scenic lookout points. The Pinnacles, interesting and old rock formations, make for a great stop, and there are also several impressive waterfalls. There is a good variety of things to see within this beautiful national park.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Great Smoky Mountains

A real natural gem in North Carolina, the Great Smoky National Park offers spectacular wildlife-rich forests to explore and an abundance of activities to help your family make the most of the great outdoors and have maximum fun! Horse riding is often a favourite with kids. There are museums that provide more information about the park and a tour with a ranger is a terrific way to learn more and spot things that you may just miss on your own.

Denali National Park

Denali

If your family are feeling really adventurous and up for a journey into the wild, Denali National Park in Alaska could be an excellent option. Although you will need to explore by organised transportation (private cars are not permitted) you are all but certain to see lots of different animals, including sheep, moose, dear, beavers, wolves, eagles, and, perhaps most excitingly, bears.
